Overnight Camp Session

BoyScoutsWildernessMedicineCirlce.05.jpg (125243 bytes)This 2 day- 1 night camp session at Earth Mountain offers a perfect opportunity for students to explore their natural world, work together, face challenges, and accomplish a group project.

Earth Mountain Education Farm is a 440 acre outdoor education center located at an elevation of 8300' in the canyons of the beautiful Wahatoya and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Earth Mountain offers a variety of programs to choose from and will help custom design the camp session to suit the group's needs.

Outline of overnight Camp Session

1st day:

  • 9:00 am arrival 
  • Hike the students to base camp on a short trail - this allows the students to feel truly immersed in the wild right from the start and gives them an introduction to the natural world. 
  • At base camp- introductions/games/camp schedule 
  • Camp Set Up 
  • Lunch 
  • Group Project 
    - this project is specifically designed depending on the # of students and type of experiential education desired 
    - (project ideas) bridge building, trailblazing, natural building 
  • Dinner 
  • Free Time 
  • Campfire Activities 
  • Bed

2nd day: 

  • 7:30am wake -up
  • 8:00am Sunrise Sit 
  • Breakfast G
  • roup Project

Programs Offered

  • Trailblazing ( hiking, working with tools, trail building and maintenance , discovery of local flora and fauna, group project) 
  • Wilderness first aid (learn how to handle a medical emergency situation in the wilderness and respond to various injuries using only what is available around you) 
  • Native American crafts (dreamcatchers, beading, weaving, leather work, drum making, tipi making) 
  • Wood working (spoon carving, furniture making, bowls) 
  • Primitive camp craft (cordage, fire making, shelter building, cooking, wild edible and medicinal plants, finding water and filtration, navigation) 
  • Principles of Sustainability (renewable energy, organic farming, waste systems, permaculture, simple living techniques) 
  • Environmental Education (local plant identification and uses, ecosystem studies, water studies, wildlife identification and habitat, ethnobotany) 
  • Four elements (Fire: fire making, cooking, fire uses, fire safety, wildland fire fighting Air: clouds, rain, reading the sky, pollution Water: finding water, filtration, stream studies, water plants and animals, watersheds Earth: soil testing, farming, walking lightly, pollution, formation of mountains and the land)
  • Natural Building (learn to build with adobe, cob, straw, wood, rock and various other gifts of nature.
  • Mountaineering ( hiking, backpacking, navigation, camp set-up, campfire cooking)
  • Recycled Art ( transform various scrap resources to beautiful works of art) 
  • Ancient drumming and song ( learn drumming techniques and songs/chants from various ancient cultures)
  • Talking with your hands (fun and easy American Sign Language essentials)

Director/ Educators can choose from the list of programs offered to incorporate into the overnight camp session.

Hands-on learning is a proven, fun and effective way to guide students toward independence, stewardship, social responsibility and individual awareness.

  • Earth Mountain can accommodate 6 to 15 students.
  • We ask that for every 6 students there be at least one adult chaperone.
  • All food and materials are included in the cost of the program.
  • Cost: $30 per student per day (a down payment of ½ the cost of the program is required at the time of registration).
